HP 363 Ink Expiration Expiry Date Override to Continue Printing

0

Some HP cartridges have an ink expiration date added to the chip which eventually stops them from working.  The Hewlett Packard HP 363 cartridges have this information incorporated into the software.  Fortunately this is one of the models that let you over-ride the message and allow you to continue printing.

HP reasoning behind adding such technology to prevent indefinite use of certain ink cartridges use is that Air ingestion and water evaporation can cause ink to change over time. In printing systems where the printhead and ink supply are separate, older ink can adversely impact the printhead and the ink delivery components within the printer.  However as these cartridges come in sealed units and if they are opened for the first time after the expiry date has been reached, then this explanation is floored.  Ink quality if stored in the correct conditions can be sustained for many years, well beyond any expiry date.

The warranty period for most HP cartridges and printheads is 24 months from the date of manufacture and HP ensure that the stock leaves their warehouse at least 12 months before the end date.  The date is usually stamped on the bottom or back of the box.  HP list 4 years as the maximum lifetime for most cartridges and 2.5 years if inside the printer.  Ink expiration is not warranty expiration, so this is why HP allow an override on most cartridge models.

HP state on their website that it is indeed possible to override the ink expiry message and continue to print, however they do not give any instructions as to how to achieve this.  Seemingly this would be hard to list as each printer model may require a slightly different solution.  Instead HP advise to follow the instructions on the printer, user manual, and computer screen monitor.  There should be a way to confirm to the printer that you wish to continue to print.  In practice however it appears that some owners have removed the cmos battery which is often located on the left side of the printer.  You will need to remove a plastic cover to expose the main board and see this.  Make sure that the machine is unplugged at the wall and leave the battery out for a few minutes so that the memory resets.  For most people though this is a bridge too far to travel.  Only the DIYer type of person will attempt this type of reset fix.

A Chip resetter does not exist for the HP 363 models, however refillable cartridges are available which have auto reset chips ARC fitted.  They can easily be refilled from the top and do not stop working.

A greener Demo means good news for toner based printing copying

0

Dan Terdiman (GreeterDan) of CNET has a piece (see "In search of a greener conference (and products)") on the new, greener Demo conference including a Tweeter photo (see above) of the conference documentation.

This year, the commercially-printed, often stylish and artful program guide has been replaced with "basic black" -- functional monochrome output (stapled but NOT duplexed) either laser printed or copied (though we know that distinction is disappearing, and I will be following up on the output device). This is the kind of evolution that printer companies like HP (NYSE HPQ) are targeting for growing or at least maintaining pages printed, with traditional typeset jobs moving in-house to office printers and MFPs. And as Terdiman points out, its part of a green movement as well, because those old bound conference guides, as elegant as they were, most likely hit the dumpster in the days or weeks following the conference.

And the other side of that evolution (or more accurately the next stage of the continuum)? The attendee list, which was in recent years an office-printed and -stapled multi-page inclusion in the conference attendee bag, has now migrated to a Web-only existence, as the Demo Website continues to grow and broaden in its capabilities.

Google Presentations and more enhanced printing

0

As regular readers might recall, Im both a user and sometimes critic of Google (NASDAQ GOOG) Documents, I was excited to see more "print enhancements" featured in the "Just Launched" section of their latest "Whats New" update.

Unlike the traditional Office Suite business, where new versions seem to come out every four years or so (i.e. 2003, 2007, ...), with Service Packs every year or two in between, the nascent Web App biz seems to be able to roll in new features and benefits whenever theyre ready. I posted just a month ago (see "Google Docs now with enhanced print capability") about better printing from the "word processing" module of Google Docs (which is also referred to as "Docs"*), and in that brief post I anticipated better printing from Google Presentations coming next.

Well, a month later, here it is..."More print options for your slides
Now you can print 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, or 12 slides on a single sheet of paper. Save trees and still get useful handouts to share!" As I noted in my post on a September 2007 test drive (see "Web-Based Application Printing -- Google Presentations") the old "2-up" limitation was way too restrictive. Good news, Google! And my first hands-on trial, just now, seems to work pretty, pretty good!

* In SAT terms, Office is to Word as Docs is to Docs.
