HOW RESET DRUM PAGE COUNTER ON A DELL 1710 1710N LASER PRINTER

0

How to Reset the Drum Page Counter on a Dell 1710/1710n Laser Printer ?, After replacing the imaging drum in a Dell printer, the "change drum light images" can remain flashing as if the printer does not recognize a new drum is installed. Another imaging drum can be inserted to see if the first was bad, but it is likely that the drum page counter needs to be restored. These instructions are not provided in the user manual and can be frustrating to carry out exactly like the printer. It may take several attempts to persevere for the time and you are going to print again soon.

Can I reset the ink Level on a Lexmark and Dell Ink Cartridge

0

When Lexmark and Dell ink cartridges (Dells are made by Lexmark) run out of ink, users may find it desirable to cut costs by refilling cartridges with new ink. However, Lexmark and Dell printers have a tendency to "not" recognize refilled ink cartridges as being sufficiently filled with ink, resulting in a message notifying the user that the levels are low or at times empty. With the right steps, its possible to convince both Lexmark and Dell printers that the ink cartridges still have plenty of ink contained within them. So why does the cartridge show low or empty? The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) will often deter its customers from recycling or refilling so that they can promote more sales. Not environmentally friendly but a good money making scheme none the less. Most Lexmark and Dell printers simply use a memory system that can be by-passed for detailed instructions click here for more information on how to re-set your ink levels.  Most print head type cartridges (and many of the ink tank type) do not contain any measurement tool that can accurately assess ink levels. So how does it work? Well the printer will guess how much ink you use by counting the pages pushed through it. Not convinced, try printing 200 blank pages on your printer and watch the ink levels go down..did you use any ink? The answer was "no" but the cartridges think you have..! Most people will then rush out and buy more ink, Viva Ink do refill and recycle and I am amazed at how "full" many of the ink cartridges are when they are returned for recycling, this suggests (to me) that we are wasting so much ink by relying on the guidance of the OEMs to advise when we need to buy a new cartridge. Do they have a conflict of interst? are they influenced by their aim of selling more ink no matter what the cost to the environment? Or is it just me? Why not visit the home of Viva ink to find out more.

A greener Demo means good news for toner based printing copying

0

Dan Terdiman (GreeterDan) of CNET has a piece (see "In search of a greener conference (and products)") on the new, greener Demo conference including a Tweeter photo (see above) of the conference documentation.
Share photos on twitter with Twitpic
This year, the commercially-printed, often stylish and artful program guide has been replaced with "basic black" -- functional monochrome output (stapled but NOT duplexed) either laser printed or copied (though we know that distinction is disappearing, and I will be following up on the output device). This is the kind of evolution that printer companies like HP (NYSE HPQ) are targeting for growing or at least maintaining pages printed, with traditional typeset jobs moving in-house to office printers and MFPs. And as Terdiman points out, its part of a green movement as well, because those old bound conference guides, as elegant as they were, most likely hit the dumpster in the days or weeks following the conference.

And the other side of that evolution (or more accurately the next stage of the continuum)? The attendee list, which was in recent years an office-printed and -stapled multi-page inclusion in the conference attendee bag, has now migrated to a Web-only existence, as the Demo Website continues to grow and broaden in its capabilities.

A new favorite iPhone app JotNot

0

Last week I tweeted* about some amazing results (to me anyway) from Amazons (NASDAQ AMZN) "Amazon Remembers" portion of the online booksellers Apple (NASDAQ AAPL) iPhone app:

Amazon Remembers on iPhone is amazing -- it found me a GREEN LA Lakers cap to buy, based on the submitted photo of my friends similar but not identical cap. 5:40 PM Mar 17th from web

(Once again, Twitter proves you can say most anything in 140 characters or less -- or at least attempt to!)

And one of my most respected writers and technoids, The Wall Street Journals Walt Mossberg, shared his iPhone favorites in March 26ths Personal Technology column"Some Favorite Apps That Make iPhone Worth the Price". He includes that "other" Amazon (NASDAQ AMZN) app, the Kindle book reader (see "Kindle Meets iPhone"), along with some of my other top apps, including the excellent Facebook and Google Mobile applications.

But now Ive got another new favorite, JotNot, by Mobi Tech 3000 LTD. My first exposure was a profile in TechCrunch (see "JotNot Turns Your iPhone’s Camera Into A Document Scanner"), and since then Ive purchased ($3.99) and downloaded the app, and put it to use. So far, so good! Ive converted quick snaps of receipts and other paperwork into permanent photo records, and also made some previous whiteboard snaps clear and much more usable.

Recalling my enthusiasm for Amazon Remembers, I find JotNot interesting because its another application for iPhones built-in digital camera thats not the traditional "picture-taking" mode that mimics traditional cameras, digital and film, but rather another, different use for captured still images.

To get started you can try their web version at www.jotnot.com.

A Better Cloud Printer II API interface

0

This post continues from my earlier post:

The API definition

So I have got my software stack on a drawing board, next is to make it happen with actual code. RestFul API requests are defined in JSON format:

// this is the very 1st API definition, print out something to a remote printer
{
"sid" :"asdfasdf",
"secret" :"13wd23d2323r",
"apiversion" :"2014-01-01",
"service" :"submit",
"parameter" :{
"printerid" :"asdf2323wd2e",
"title" :"xxxxxxx",
"content" :"xxxxxxx",
"contentType" :"PLAINTEXT"
}
}

// Response
{
"jobid" :"xxxx",
"status":"ok", // in progress, fail, ...
"printerid" :"xxxx"
}

Will update the progress soon....

*Edit 2013-12-27

I have been working on this thing during the holiday season. The rough framework code for public API has been setup as follows:

Public facing software stack: Centos + Nginx + PHP + mySQL + GearMan
PHP libraries are:
  • Luracast Restler - the framework handles RESTful requests
  • Idiorm - ActiveRecord library. (When I am too lazy to write real SQL queries)
  • Whole bunch of PHP utility functions I wrote in the past.
Although the rage is all about Redis and Node.js, I dont see a compelling reason to use the newer software stack. Call me old school:
  • Print API data is strictly structured, saved to database as json encoded string.
  • RESTful, no state between requests.
  • The API will return right after been fired.  (before the actual printer output is finished)
  • Client Callback url for job status update.
Why not Redis/Node/Mongo/Riak/Erlang/whatever?  With Nginx + PHP-fpm, this setup should easily handle 100+ requests/sec on a very cheap VPS(by cheap,  I mean $5 per month).  And I dont see it reaching that limit with a deployment of less than 2000 printers.  If I ever run out of server capacity, the fortune is on my side.  I should already be making enough money to upgrade the servers.

For the actual worker process that handles individual request processing, I might consider something runs on top of libev as daemon.  Could be Node.js or Python Twisted, will leave that for later decision.

*Side note: I am thinking about opensource the entire thing on Github, anyone interested?
If someone can help manage the repo, Ill make it happen.

Not quite a printer acquisition

0

Todays stock market was boosted by tech stock gains, and one substantial acquisition. It was not the printer-industry-direct-hit that might have been anticipated after last weeks reports about Lexmark/Dell and HP/Kodak rumors, but there is at least a footnotes worth of relevance to this one. Beaverton OR-based Tektronix is being purchased by Danaher for $2.8 Billion.

Tektronix is a test and measurement company that ventured into printers not so long ago, and did quite well with a line of solid inkjet products. The division was sold to Xerox for a little less than $1 Billion in 2000. The further development of those products under Xerox management has led to many new printer and all-in-one products over the years and the companys recent "color at black-and-white prices" marketing push.
